Description:
Peer coaches at the SUU Disability Resource Center (DRC) work with a student cohort of 3-4 incoming freshman students for the 2023-2024 academic year. Training will be offered at the beginning of fall semester and peer coaching positions are for the full academic year: fall & spring semester. Peer coaches coordinate, develop and guide/instruct DRC freshman students in weekly meetings that may include:
- Utilization and access of accommodations on campus.
- Transition and acclimation to university standards and life.
- Campus tours with introduction and training of campus resources.
- Goal-setting, study strategies and exam preparedness.
- Stress management, life balance and self-advocacy advice.
- Time management: creating and implementing a weekly academic and personal schedule.
- Job and future career path steps and progression.
Qualifications:
A qualified peer coach should be or have the following characteristics:
- A current sophomore or junior at SUU with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Experience working with the Disability Resource Center as a registered student, having stepped through a minimum of one year as a mentee, - accessing support services and accommodations.
- Effective time management, organization, study, and social skills.
- Compassionate, patient, resourceful and willing to learn alongside their student cohort.
- Ability to individualize instruction for meetings that align with each student's needs.
- Familiarity of SUU resources and how to use them.
